When They Are Ready… Here are the Top 5 Best Laptops For 10-Year-Old Boy; 2020. Give them something they will show their friends, that will boost their ego and brag about it.
Technology is not what it was 20 years ago. It is uses and implementation in our everyday lives is growing in ways we never imagined even 10 years ago!
Think back a decade and try to remember; how many of us were using Facebook? I certainly was not.
Messenger still did not even exist yet. How many schools assigned laptops as workbooks? 10 years may not seem like much, but it passes quickly when innovations are being made every day that change the way we live.
This is still only the beginning of the Information Age. It is up to us as parents to give our kids all the knowledge they need to keep up with the growing use of computers. That means staying as up to date as we can ourselves, so we are not giving them bad information.
The phone in my pocket is an endless library of information to be learned. “Information about how to find relevant, correct information and how to best learn more information about it all.” That is a heavy responsibility when you think about it, and we all have that obligation whether we realize it or not.
Deciding when your child is ready to carry that responsibility is solely up to you. It is not too terrifying of a prospect if you are already familiar with Parental Controls, and Restrictions. This way we can easily monitor what our kids see and what they have access to.
You can even limit the amount of internet they can use by time, or usage. The easiest part about it is you can even do all this remotely, say, from your own laptop, or even your phone! This takes a big weight off the chest as a parent; knowing that a 10-year-old boy going through puberty does not have infinite access to whatever he wants to see. lol That’s another article for another time altogether.
All, if you are reading this then you have made the decision to buy a laptop for your boy. The questions you must ask before buying are simple enough.
- What will the system be used for mostly? Is it a school laptop, or just one for Netflix? Does your child play video games, or are they more of a photographer? This is the essential question for determining what they will need as far as hardware capability.
- What’s your budget? A lot can be found in your budget is upward of a thousand or more. If you are like me though, you are not going to be able to afford the latest ROG laptop, so you will likely have to make a sacrifice regarding hardware capability. Which is not to say you have bad options, only fewer options that are astounding. Computers are always becoming obsolete too, so do not get that flashy one you cannot afford because next week it will be worth a third of what it cost.
Next, I have a few definitions of computer hardware for those of us that are not sure what the specs of a computer are really saying. Just the more important components, so you can be more comfortable deciding.
CPU/Processor- The brain of the whole thing. Everything a computer does starts with 0’s, and 1’s. Simple calculations, and codes that are written and translated so quickly that it would boggle your mind. The better the CPU, the faster these translations happen. More cores = more overall speed, and accuracy (smoothness) Examples of processors you would want would be Intel i7 or newer, AMD Ryzen 3 or newer.
Memory/RAM- Random Access Memory is the systems short term memory. This is important in two ways; one is that this affects how much your computer can be doing at one time, and two is that this acts as the nervous system for the brain (CPU), meaning it will either enhance, or limit what your CPU can do. Basically, it affects how fast the computer is. As of the day this was written, the RAM you want is DDR4.
SSD/HDD- Information used to be written to floppy disks, and hard drives. We still use hard drives regularly (HDD) as they are still very useful for storing information we want to keep for a long time. Floppy disks were replaced by USB thumb drives which were the early versions of Solid-State Drives.
I won’t go into detail about the differences between them all, but what you should know is that SSD storage will save, and transfer files much faster than traditional HDD storage, but SSD is more volatile than HDD.
So, you are more likely to lose data if you overuse an SSD. Ideally, a computer should have both SSD, and HDD.
GPU- Graphical Processing Units are the optic nerves of the system; allowing you to see the result of the countless calculations being made in the CPU. More powerful graphics components are required to play newer video games or use graphic design software. The newest types of GPU are GDDR6, but those are very expensive. GDDR5 will be more than sufficient for even Virtual Reality gaming.
ASUS VivoBook 15: The Mid-Range, Mid-Priced
Price and capability are the balance to be found here. The VivoBook has everything you could hope for in a modern laptop, but not a price that will break your bank.
Personally, I prefer ASUS over any other brand when it comes to laptops. This one comes equipped with a Ryzen 7, and Radeon Vega 10 graphics. Those two alone make this worth the asking price.
Durable enough for everyday use, and capable of playing most newer games; your son would love it!
Here’s why I recommend this laptop for your son:

- Operating System: Windows 10 Home
- Weight: 3.53 pounds
- Dimensions: 14.1 x 9.1 x 0.8 inches

Jumper EZbook X3 Pro: The Frugal Option
We cannot all afford a powerhouse computer, and there is nothing wrong with that! You can find very usable, up to date systems for 1/4 of what some higher end laptops will cost.
For instance, this Jumper system is not going to fail anytime soon. It will not likely run most new video games, but it will handle a workload without tiring out for some Minecraft later.
This model also can be upgraded to handle more storage options. A rarity in notebooks these days.
ASUS TUF FX505 Gaming Laptop: What Every Boy Wants
Ask yourself 3 questions before buying this for a 10-year-old:
1) Can I afford this?
2) Are they responsible enough to handle such a system?
3) Do they deserve such a system?
If you can honestly answer “yes” to all 3 then I say make the kids day. It will be a long time before they forget this one, and start asking for gifts again, I assure you.
The ASUS TUF series is the little brother to the far more sought after ROG series. The cost is the first difference you’ll notice between the two. Nonetheless I am a grown man who would envy the 10-year-old with this at his disposal.
It is ready to take on anything you throw at it, period. Any new game will run on this system, including VR. Which goes without saying that the Ryzen 5, the dedicated GeForce GTX 1650, and 32 GB of RAM will handle the workload of every person in your son’s school, including the staff.
To top it all off, you have a 2 TB SSD to keep everything you will ever need. 2 TB is a lot, unless you have a lot of games on the system at one time.
For reference, in its best quality, a movie is about 2GB. 1TB is equal to 1000GB, or 500 movies at optimal quality.
Apple MacBook Air: Apple Family?
Many of us today have opted to go with the simplicity of a brand like Apple. They are high quality, user friendly, well secured, and they allow for easy control over what your children are allowed access to.
If you and your family have iPhones and have been using them for any extended period, it may not be a bad idea to invest in one of these newer MacBooks.
They are a bit pricey, but if you are an Apple advocate, then you are no stranger to the cost of this technology.
ASUS TUF A15 Gaming Laptop The Overall Best Option
Like the FX505 from earlier in the list, but much more reasonable of an option for a preteen boy. The price is better, the durability is better, and the components are only mildly toned down.
Best of all? This is a fully upgradable system, which is rare for laptops in this day, and age. It also means that as newer components are sold, you can upgrade this system, and not have to worry about upgrading the whole thing within a few years.
It is strong enough to withstand unforgiving blunt force, such as a fall. The keyboard is designed to handle a little liquid getting under the keys (See manual for cleaning instructions) making this ideal for a young boy who has a lot of schoolwork, but also plays a lot of games.
This system will play most newer games at optimal resolution. With a few small upgrades, it can boast playability of every modern game including VR.
These options are only a fraction of what is offered. This is not all inclusive by any means. Performance levels will vary greatly from system to system and can only be judged after being utilized in a real-world scenario. There are even cheaper options to be found elsewhere if you do not mind used options.
